A ti, recém-colega, que este ano inicias a tua jornada na Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa (FMUL) - muitos parabéns!
É com grande entusiasmo que a Associação de Estudantes da Faculdade de Medicina de Lisboa (AEFML) te dá as boas vindas e desejos de sucesso para esta nova etapa, que será repleta de desafios, amizades, crescimento e descoberta.
Bem sei que esta fase pode parecer assustadora pelo desconhecido que se avizinha, mas se chegaste até aqui é porque certamente tens a perseverança que tão bem caracteriza quem estuda nesta casa e que te fará chegar mais longe do que alguma vez pensaste ser possível. Muitas vezes é no desconhecido que se escondem as melhores surpresas, por isso não tenhas medo de arriscar, de sair da tua vossa zona de conforto e, acima de tudo, aproveita ao máximo! Agora pode parecer uma eternidade, mas a verdade é que os próximos anos passarão a correr (irás ouvir muitas vezes estas palavras) e este percurso - o teu percurso - será aquilo que quiseres fazer dele. Aqui terás a oportunidade de te desenvolver enquanto profissional de saúde, seja numa vertente mais clínica ou de investigação, mas isso não significa que tenhas de colocar as tuas outras paixões de parte. Terás à tua disposição uma vasta oferta de atividades e iniciativas emblemáticas dinamizadas pela Comunidade Estudantil através das quais poderás enriquecer a tua passagem pelo ensino superior e, quem sabe, descobrir uma vocação escondida. Poderás envolver-te em iniciativas de voluntariado e formação, dar asas à tua veia mais artística ou desportista, participar em workshops complementares ao que aprendes no curso e tornar-te um membro ativo na defesa dos interesses e direitos das pessoas estudantes.
O ato de cuidar, intrinsecamente inerente a qualquer profissional de saúde, é um compromisso que exige mais do que mero conhecimento científico, mas um pleno respeito pela condição humana e a sua natureza holística. Mas como poderemos entender o todo de alguém antes sequer de abrirmos portas ao todo que temos dentro de nós?!
A partir de agora também tu fazes parte desta Associação de Estudantes cheia de história, vitalidade, ambição e repleta de estudantes que um dia igualmente se depararam com a imponente fachada do Hospital de Santa Maria pela primeira vez numa dualidade de expectância e receio. Nestas pessoas virás a encontrar mentores, amizades, apoio, alguém com quem desabafar, a quem pedir conselhos e uma lembrança constante de que o curso não se faz a sós.
A AEFML está cá para ti, pronta para te apoiar, para te representar ao longo desta viagem e ansiosa por ver a marca que vais querer deixar, porque tu também és parte do presente e futuro desta Casa.

To you, new colleague, who this year begins your journey at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (FMUL) – congratulations!
It's great enthusiasm that the Lisbon School of Medicine Students’ Union welcomes you and wishes you great success in this new stage, which will be filled with challenges, friendships, growth, and discovery.
We know well that this phase may seem challenging because of the unknown that lies ahead, but if you have made it this far, it is certainly because you have the perseverance that so well characterizes those who study in this institution and that will take you further than you ever thought was possible. Many times, it is in the unknown that the best surprises are hidden, so do not be afraid to take risks, to step out of your comfort zone, and, above all, to make the most of it! For now, it may feel like an eternity, but the truth is that the next few years will fly by (you will hear this many times) and this journey – your journey – will be what you make of it. Here you will have the opportunity to develop yourself as a health professional, whether in a more clinical or research-oriented path, but that doesn't mean you have to put aside your other passions. You will have at your disposal a wide range of activities and emblematic initiatives promoted by the Student Community, through which you can enrich your time in higher education and, who knows, discover a hidden vocation. You may get involved in volunteering and training initiatives, give wings to your artistic or sporting side, take part in workshops that complement what you learn in the course, and become an active member in defending the interests and rights of students.
The act of caring, intrinsically inherent to any health professional, is a commitment that requires more than mere scientific knowledge: it requires full respect for the human condition and its holistic nature. But how can we understand the whole of someone else before even opening the doors to the whole that lies within ourselves?
From now on, you too are part of this Student Association full of history, vitality, ambition, and students who also faced for the first time the big walls of Santa Maria Hospital, in a duality of anticipation and fear. In these people, you will find mentors, friendships, support, someone to confide in, to ask for advice, and a constant reminder that this course is not done alone.
We are here for you, ready to support you, to represent you throughout this journey, and eager to see the mark you will want to leave, because you too are part of the present and future of this Home.
